The Harsh Statistical Reality

The Raiders’ secondary problems run far deeper than casual observation suggests. Pro Football Focus ranked Las Vegas’ secondary 32nd – dead last – in their latest list, confirming what has been evident through statistical analysis.

2024 Performance Disaster

The 2024 season was catastrophic for Las Vegas across all metrics. The Raiders finished the season at 4-13 while going winless against the AFC West for the first time since 2006. Their pass defense was particularly vulnerable, with Las Vegas ranking 32nd in passing yards allowed per game (223.4) and 27th in rushing yards allowed per game (79.8).

Individual Player Performance Issues

The secondary’s personnel problems are glaring when examined statistically:

Jeremy Chinn: Despite being the most seasoned veteran, his 65.2 grade in 2024 was his best in three years—a reflection of recent struggles

Coverage Grades: The unit is expected to start multiple players who posted coverage grades below 50.0 last season, which represents statistically poor performance in professional football.

Interception Production: The team’s turnover creation was minimal, with Jack Jones leading with just 3 interceptions, followed by Robert Spillane and Tre’von Moehrig with 2 each.

Historical Context of Failure

Multi-Year Decline

The secondary’s problems aren’t new. Eric Stokes, a former first-round pick, has allowed a 100-plus QB rating when targeted over the last three seasons, and fellow corners Jakorian Bennett and Darnay Holmes aren’t that much better. This represents sustained poor performance over multiple seasons.

Personnel Turnover Issues

Las Vegas also lost Robert Spillane, who at the very least provided stable play at linebacker, removing one of their few reliable defensive performers from 2023.

The Pete Carroll Challenge

Track Record vs. Current Reality

While Carroll has an impressive history of developing elite secondaries, particularly the Legion of Boom defense that led the league in scoring defense for four consecutive seasons during his tenure in Seattle, the Raiders present unique challenges:

Talent Disparity: Unlike Seattle where he inherited or developed players like Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, and Richard Sherman, there’s not a starter in the secondary who we trust for Las Vegas.

Developmental Timeline: Both Decamerion Richardson and Jakorian Bennett are still young enough to improve on their underwhelming starts, but improvement isn’t guaranteed and may take years.

Recent Struggles in Seattle

Even Carroll’s recent track record shows concerning trends. His Seahawks finished 9-8 and missed out on the playoffs for the second time in three seasons before his departure, suggesting his methods may not translate as effectively in the modern NFL.

Immediate 2025 Concerns

Schedule Reality

Don’t go look at the first four QBs they play this season – this suggests the Raiders face elite quarterbacks early who will likely exploit secondary weaknesses immediately.

Depth Chart Problems

The projected starting lineup features players with proven statistical deficiencies, and the team drafted cornerback Darien Porter in the third round, and he could provide a spark, but the unit is expected to start multiple players who posted coverage grades below 50.0 last season.

Systemic Issues Beyond Coaching

Front Office Continuity

The Raiders fired Pierce two days after the season ended. Two days later, Telesco was also fired, indicating organizational instability that extends beyond just coaching changes.

Defensive Infrastructure

To make matters worse, Wilkins’ foot injury is lingering into the summer, affecting even their defensive line strength and putting more pressure on an already vulnerable secondary.

Secondary Sedentary

The statistical evidence presents a sobering picture: the Raiders’ secondary ranks historically poorly across multiple metrics, features players with sustained poor performance, and faces elite competition immediately. While Carroll’s track record with secondary development is legendary, the talent deficit, recent performance trends, and organizational instability create a perfect storm that even his expertise may struggle to overcome quickly. The 32nd ranking isn’t just a number—it reflects years of poor personnel decisions and performance that will require more than coaching adjustments to fix.
